Basic Golf Tips for Solid Driver Shots

Many golfers are intimidated by driver shots and in an effort to “drive for show” lose focus of driver shot fundamentals forgetting to simply let the driver do the work for them. Remember, it is much, much better to hit a straight 200 yard drive into the fairway than a 300 slice into the woods.
With that said, here are a few basic golf tips to setup properly for driver shots which will result in both more accuracy and longer distance.

Ball position golf basics – Though you should hit downward on the ball to hit crisp iron shots, the driver shot should ascend with a goal to make contact with the ball as the driver club head moves upward. To promote this ascending swing, the ball must be placed forward in the stance.  A good driver basic golf tip is that the ball is aligned with the heel of the left foot (approximately three balls left of center for right handers).

Posture and stance golf basics – Take a slightly wider than shoulder-width stance and tilt from hips until spine/back angle is approximately 30 degrees from straight position.

Backswing golf basics – When making backswing, large muscles of torso should wind up like a spring as you turn against right knee. “Lock” right knee in place at same angle as address.

Downswing golf basics – To start downswing, shift weight to left, triggering chain reaction of hips, chest, arms and club all pulling behind the ball. At impact, try to keep the head behind the ball as this helps maintain your swing plane and promotes ascending swing arc through ball contact. It is especially important to keep your left arm straight from impact through release and avoid the dreaded left elbow breakdown (or “chicken wing”) which causes a host of errant shots.

A great practice drill for driver shots is the “whoosh” drill which can be practiced on the range or between shots on the course.  Here are basic golf tips to execute the whoosh drill:

1. Flip driver upside down and grip shaft just above club head.
2. Make normal swing with driver and listen for “whoosh” sound from shaft on the downswing.
3. The whoosh sound should be heard after “impact” resulting from proper extension and acceleration through ball.
4. Practice the drill until whoosh sound is heard after point of impact. Carry over this sensation to full swing for more distance with driver shots.

Four Golf Tips To Achieve Distance and Pinpoint Accuracy

If you carefully scrutinize a good player’s swing—a player whose golf handicap is in the single digits—you’ll notice something odd. There’s a flat spot at the bottom of the swing arc, just as the club strikes the ball. This flatness isn’t an optical illusion. It’s real. And it’s significant. Launch angle is critical to generating power and accuracy from the tee box. It also fosters solid contact .
 
Every tee shot has an optimum launch angle off the tee—no matter what the club. This angle depends almost entirely on clubhead speed at impact. Driving the ball off the tee with the right clubhead speed and launch angle produces a ball flight that helps golfers gain distance and achieve accuracy. Unfortunately, players with high golf handicaps don’t always understand the relationship between clubhead speed and launch angle.

Defining Launch Angle

Launch angle, as I’ve explained in many golf tips, is the angle at which a ball leaves the clubface. Launch angle results primarily from two factors: ball speed and ball spin. Correctly adjusting one or both increases driving distance and accuracy. That in turn helps cut some strokes from your scores and your golf handicap. In other words, if you really want to bomb one down the fairway, you must hit the ball at the perfect launch angle. Below are some keys to doing so:

1. Check Your Grip For Square Contact

To drive your ball straight and far, you must make square contact with the ball. To do that, you need the right grip—one allowing you to return the clubhead to the ball squarely time after time after time. The best grip for that is a neutral one. A weak grip turns the hands too far to the left (right, for a left-hander) producing a slice. A strong grip turns the hands too far to the right (left, for a left-hander), generating a hook. But a neutral grip aligns the hands with the club head, increasing your chances of making solid contact at the optimum launch angle.

2. Get A Feel For Impact

In addition to a neutral grip, develop a feel for impact. Here’s a good drill for that:

Set up a chair in front of you. Position the back of the chair so that it’s aligned where you would position the ball on the tee, with the back facing forward. Assume your address position. Turn away from the chair just as you would on your backswing. Swing down, hitting the back of the chair squarely with the palm of your right hand (left for lefties).

This drill ingrains the feel of impact and develops a good turn away from the ball—just like they teach in golf lessons.

3. Balance Address To Predetermine Launch Angle

Your address position predetermines your position at impact. It’s critical you have a balanced address. If your weight is too far forward, you increase your chances of hitting the ball with an upward, glancing blow. If your weight is set too far back, you’ll hit down on the ball, popping it up. Distribute your weight evenly and you’ll hit the ball squarely.

4. Ease Into Swing

Staying on the correct swing plane is essential to hitting longer, more accurate drives. To determine if you’re on the proper swing plane, hold the club in front of you, chest high, with your arms fully extended. Lazily, begin swinging the club back and forth. Lower the club until it starts swishing the ground. That’s the proper swing plane for that club. It’s also a good tempo to play at and swing at.

These four tips won’t turn you into Phil Mickelson. Nor will they eliminate the need for some people to take golf lessons. But they will help you gain additional yardage off the tee and achieve pinpoint accuracy consistently. Golf Tips 101 – How to Execute a Chip Shot

This article is from a group of articles that detail free golf tips.  This article talks about a chip shot and the proper way to execute it.  A good chip shot can mean the difference between a tap in and a 30 footer.

So what exactly is a chip shot?  A chip shot is one that where the amount of time spent in the air is lower than the amount of time it rolls on the ground.  A good percentage would be 30-70 where 30 represents the time spent in the air and 70 represents the time spent rolling on the ground.  A pitch shot would be the opposite.  This type of shot would be like a 70-30 or even higher.  Otherwise known as a lob shot, the pitch shot travels mostly in the air and will not roll much on the ground.

Where do you hit chip shots from?  A chip shot can be hit from anywhere just off the green to about 30 yards.  Sometimes you’ll hear a golfer talking about a chip and run.  This shot comes at a distance greater than 30 yards where the goal is just to punch it towards the green and let it run across the ground up to the flagstick.  I will hit my chip shots off the fringe, fairway, and even out of the rough.

chip shots can be pretty easy to execute.  The setup is really not that much different than a normal setup.  Let’s start out with the stance.  I usually like to have an open stance when i’m that close to a green.  So, I will line up my feet so they are a bit open.  My hips and shoulders will still be in line with my target point.  The ball position will be a little closer to my back leg/foot than in a normal position.  I do this just to make sure I have good contact with the ball and hit it before the ground.  A chip shot that you hit fat (ground first) will result in a poor effort and will not go that far.  As I set up for the shot I make sure the grooves on the clubface are exactly in line with my target point.  Once everything is lined up, I can begin the swing.

A chip shot swing is a bit different than normal swings.  I try not to break my wrists at all.  I’ll keep my wrist stiff as I take my backswing.  I will also keep it pretty flat and not to high off the ground.  The swing also needs to be a bit abbreviated.  This means it should be shorter.  You will not take a full swing when trying to hit a chip shot.  My follow-thru will normally be straight to my target and about as long as my backswing.  So, lets recap.  Swing goes low and flat, straight back, with not much wrist hinge.  I will make sure to hit the ball first and my follow-thru will be straight to the target and the same length as my backswing.

Hopefully by following this chipping tip, you will lower the length of those tricky putts.  I know that this tip is one I use everytime i’m out on the golf course.  If it can work for me, it can work for anyone!

Every golfer is looking for a way to better their game, and trying to improve their swing through trial and error make it a frustrating game. The majority of new golfers are self-taught, and until they take the game up seriously, it is an uphill battle trying to even learn the basics of the golf swing. So how does the new golfer find a short cut for a better game, without taking the fairways apart in frustration?

In learning a new challenge, you have to take one small step at a time. Start off with the smaller steps, or goals, and slowly working towards the bigger goals. The game of golf has a short, medium and big swing. Once you learn the short swing and game, work your way up to the big swing and game. Golf is all in finding the feel of your golf swing. This golf tip will surely improve anyone’s game, once they find the balance and feel of a pendulum golf swing in motion. The following golf practice tip will help you understand the golf swing and what it takes to make it work effectively.

Place yourself around a green or a target with a 7 iron, pitching wedge and approximately 10 to 15 golf balls. If you are on a practice range, try and find an obstacle to go over during the practice. It will boost your confidence on the golf course. Step away from the golf balls and practice short swings with your feet together glancing at your attended target. Do not attempt to hit a golf ball until you feel comfortable with your short swing. If you must, hit one golf ball with your desired club to find and feel the distance for your attended target. Use very little wrist action on the take-away and follow through creating a v shape with the arms. Try to find and feel the pendulum motion of the golf club by grazing the grass, as you swing away glancing at the attended target.

Your goal is to find and feel the pendulum motion of the golf club making contact with the ball with your feet together. You will notice how your upper portion of the body will automatically coil on it’s own, and you lower body will move in unison with your upper body. Once you find the pendulum feeling of the golf club and swing, take a bigger swing. Gradually learn to sweep the grass with a quarter, half, three quarter and a full swing. You will notice yourself losing balance as you take fuller swings, and have to gradually move your feet apart until you find a balanced comfort zone.

With enough practice and effort, your golf score will improve dramatically with the knowledge of what it takes to make a ball bounce off the face of a golf club with a pendulum motion of the golf swing, once you find the balance and feel of a short swing and game. Practicing this golf tip frequently will also help in choosing the right club and swing, for distance in your short game.
